NMB NicheMarketBlogger.com Hello, I'm Bruce Bird and this is a distillation of what I've learned about Wordpress. Bruce

Create A WordPress Blog On My Hosting Service

This lesson will show you how to install a WordPress blog on your own hosting service. This is much more effective for traffic and business development than using the free service available on www.Wordpress.com because WordPress.com is necessarily limited in order to keep it safe with the thousands of users that keep their blog there.

Log in to the cPanel of your domain

Just add /cPanel after your domain name in the address bar of your browser

Depending on your hosting service you may get this type of login window – or the next illustration. Roboform does not work with this one – more about Roboform in a moment.

But it does with this! :-)
This login window will appear if you Escape (the ESC key) from the previous one.

Using Roboform

I strongly recommend using Roboform to keep all your userids and passwords. (Go to Roboform.com to download a free trial copy)

Roboform saves an enormous amount of time by keeping safe the hundreds of IDs and passwords you will accumulate and presenting them immediately when required. Just hit Fill Forms from the Roboform toolbar to get the Roboform Fill Forms window

Roboform detects the page/domain you are on and asks which of the logins relevant to that domain do you want to use. As you can see I have created 3 different Roboform Passcards, one each for the cPanel access, for the WP blog and for the Semiologic Pro package upgrade service.
Each of these saves me a few seconds at a time – that mount up to a lot of time saved when you are hunting for information you have saved.
If you don't have Roboform yet then don't worry, just use the ID and password provided by your hosting service. Then make sure you get Roboform as soon as possible.

The cPanel User Interface With Your Hosting Service

Your cPanel interface will look something like this. There are various Themes to change the appearance but it will contain the same items whichever theme is being used.

Fantastico

Somewhere, often close to the bottom, you will find Fantastico.
Fantastico manages the installation of free 'one-click' installations of software packages called scripts.

Free Scripts

All the way down the left sidebar you will see free 'one-click' installation scripts.
You are only interested in WordPress.

Install WordPress

Hover your mouse over the dark blue text and you will see that most of them are hyperlinks.
Click on New Installation to install your blog.
As you can see from this screenshot there is already a blog installed in the root area (shown by '/' ) of this site.

Deciding where to put your blog

media-12393809482254.png

1. This is where you decide where to put your blog i.e. in what folder. For most niche bloggers where the blog is the whole site then leave it blank, as per the instructions and the blog will be installed in the root area. If you want to leave the root area clear for something else then name a folder where you want the blog to go. You do not need to create the folder first – Fantastico will do that for you.
2. Enter your admin user name. It really does not matter what you put here because you can change the nickname by which you appear on the blog later.
3. Enter a Password. Make sure you keep a record of your admin username and password as soon as you create them. Again, I use a Roboform Safenote to do this, just in case you are interrupted or diverted somehow and come back to find you can't get in to your own blog!
4. The Admin nickname can be changed later but useful to put an active email address, again in case something goes wrong in the process.
Don't worry about the sitename or description as you can edit those later as you are setting up your site.
Click on Install WordPress.

Confirmation

media-12393815016844.png

After installing your blog Fantastico will report back as shown telling you what it has done and asking for confirmation.
If you are a beginner then this is likely to be meaningless to you – as it still is to me – so just click on Finish installation.

More confirmation of WordPress installation

media-12393816366144.png

Again, a screen to confirm the username and password you have chosen – and the best part, enter your email address and Fantastico will email all the details to you.
Make sure you use this feature – and keep the email safe so you can always find the necessary information. Again, I copy and paste the information off the email and into the Roboform safenote. But then, I'm paranoid about the time I've wasted in the past looking for information like this.

Click on the WP overview link to be taken back to see what blogs you have.

And the overview confirms that I have installed another blog.
Just to confirm; the blog in the root area will appear when I type http://nichemarketblogger.com.
Whereas the for the demo blog I would need to enter http://nichemarketblogger.com/demo
Click on either of the Visit site links to visit that site. They are both completely independent blogs.

Your blog will appear with the default theme and structure.

Congratulations! You've just started your first blog.
