Widget Contexts
Currently valid in WP 2.7.1
Widget contexts enable you to switch widgets on or off on individual posts and pages.
Listing of Current Widgets
1. One of these widgets is an ad unit for Semiologic.
2. Click on the Edit link of any widget to open it up.
A Page Already Exists
Here an affiliate review page referred to as Section/Semiologic & Wordpress already exists. Pages at the top level of the heirarcy are called Sections. This page already contains a banner ad and affiliate links similar to those in the Ad widget. So to show the ad widget in the sidebar would be an unnecessary duplication.
The widget context is therefore unchecked for that Section/page and the widget will not appear.
Another example would be if you have a text widget containing your optin box. It would be confusing to show the optin box on the thank you page to which you send visitors after they have opted in to your list. So you could switch the optin box widget off for your Section / Thank You.
By switching widget contexts on or off as appropriate you can precisely control which widgets appear on all your posts and pages.
